Hogarth's Three-Quarter View

Description

I realized while trying to draw something for fun that I just wasn't approaching it properly anymore. The bad habits compounded and froze my doodles in a place that was somewhat unrecoverable. Especially since I was working digitally, I couldn't just play around and keep going.

I went to the bookshelf and pulled out Burne Hogarth's Drawing the Human Head, and started from the beginning. I double checked the things I was doing. It turns out I didn't forget anything, but my understanding was shaky. His books are filled with words, and it's hard to absorb it all. Let's say it takes 63 pages to get to this, which could be considered the second lesson. The words are very important, but once you've learned it, it can be hard to remember exactly what step should definitely come before another, or does that line represent this or that...?

The best way to learn is to teach, so I did this for myself, teaching myself as I went along. It's just what came out, almost like elaborate notes, so it's not seasoned, but I figured I'd share what I got out of it, for those who don't have access to the book, or if you want a cliff's notes (however rough it is).

The next few pages of the book cover how the bisecting line in step 2 can be placed anywhere in that half of the face - and how you must then adjust that back-of-the-head line to compensate. The more space you leave between the bisecting line and the midline, the more head in the back you have to show and vice versa. In this way, you can rotate the head simply!
